Amedeo Modigliani

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was an Italian painter and sculptor, famous for his sensual female nudes and portraits characterized by stylized faces, tapered necks and often absent gazes. He trained in Italy, going from Tuscany to Venice until he arrived in Paris in 1906 where he came into contact with people such as Pablo Picasso, Maurice Utrillo, Max Jacob, Jacques Lipchitz, Chaim Soutine and others. In Paris he also frequented important writers and poets, such as - for example - Giuseppe Ungaretti. In France he also met the young painter Jeanne Hébuterne, destined to become his life companion as well as muse for some of his paintings. In 1909 he began to approach sculpture but, although it was his real artistic aspiration, he had to abandon it soon in 1914 due to precarious physical conditions; from then on he dedicated himself only to painting, thus producing a considerable quantity of paintings, from which however he did not derive any wealth.
