Alberto Magnelli

(Florence, 1 July 1888 Meudon, 20 April 1971). He took part in international exhibitions of Abstract Art as well as the Venice Biennial, the Rome Quadrennial and the Documenta in Kassel. An internationally renowned artist, he is considered one of the leaders and first initiators of European Abstractionism. Magnelli was a careful scholar of the Great Tuscan Masters of the 14th and 15th centuries and began to paint as a self-taught artist in 1907 in a post-impressionist style. In 1914 he stayed in Paris and in the same year he switched to abstractionism, creating completely abstract paintings with geometric shapes in 1915, which are among the first examples of this type of research. In 1918 he created the lyrical explosions, abstract paintings where the expressive force of colour emerges with force but where human figures can also be glimpsed. He later developed a personal vision of painting by creating a movement that he himself defined as imaginary realism, rigorously painting figures, landscapes, boats and some still lifes.
