Marino Marini

Marino Marini was one of the leading figures in 20th-century sculpture, leading the Italian figurative tradition toward the anxieties of the modern era. Born in Pistoia in 1901, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, beginning his career as a painter and engraver before dedicating himself fully to sculpture. His signature style emerged in the 1930s, when Marini began to rework influences from Etruscan, Roman, and medieval sculpture. However, his references were never nostalgic: the artist stripped forms of academic classicism to seek an elementary, "archaic" plastic purity, charged with expressive power. In 1940, he was appointed professor of sculpture at the Brera Academy, consolidating his influence on the international art scene. Although known for his bronzes and polychromes, Marini never abandoned painting and graphic art. In these works, color becomes a vibrant element that defines space and emotions with the same intensity as his sculptural masses.
